How much does a resin driveway cost in Essex?

Honest square metre figures for resin bound surfacing, and why two quotes for the same drive can differ by thousands.

Almost every resin enquiry we take starts with the same question, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a form to fill in. Resin bound surfacing is priced by the square metre, but the square metre rate is the smaller half of the story. What sits under the resin decides both the price and whether the drive still looks right in ten years.

The figures below are the ranges we genuinely work within across Colchester, Chelmsford, Ipswich and the towns between them. They are guide figures for planning a budget, not a quotation. We price from a measured site visit because depth, access, drainage and muck away are not guessable from a photograph.

Typical resin bound driveway costs in Essex and south Suffolk

What is involvedTypical rateWhen it applies
Resin overlay on sound existing tarmac£55 to £75 per m2Only where the existing base is structurally sound, level and draining. Rare on older drives.
Full excavation and new permeable base£95 to £140 per m2The usual answer on shingle, failed concrete or a drive that has never had a proper sub base.
Groundworks extras: kerbs, channel drains, thresholds£60 to £180 per linear metreGranite or block borders, linear drainage across the garage line, level door thresholds.
Muck away and disposal£280 to £420 per lorry loadPriced by volume removed, which is why deeper digs and clay ground cost more.

Why the base sets the price

Resin bound gravel is a wearing surface a few millimetres thick. It has no structural strength of its own, so it inherits every weakness of what it is laid on. Spread it over tired tarmac with hairline cracking and the cracking reappears through the resin within two winters.

A correctly built base means excavating to suit the subsoil and the vehicles using it, a geotextile membrane where the ground is soft, then sub base compacted in layers rather than tipped and rolled once. On a permeable build up, an open graded stone allows water through the surface and into the ground, which is what keeps the drive within drainage regulations.

What makes a quote cheap

  • A shallow dig, typically 100mm where 200mm or more is needed
  • No membrane, so the sub base slowly migrates into the subsoil
  • Edges laid without haunching, so the margins spread and crack
  • Trade resin rather than a UV stable system, which yellows in sunlight
  • Aggregate spread thinly to stretch the mix, leaving a patchy finish

Where the money is well spent

Drainage is the single best place to spend. A channel drain across the garage threshold and a properly sized soakaway cost a fraction of resolving water inside a garage later.

Aggregate choice is the second. Marble and specialist blends cost more than natural gravels, but they are the thing you will look at every day, so we sample them at your property rather than showing a brochure.

What we will not quote for

We do not overlay resin on a base we do not believe in, even when a customer asks us to, because the guarantee then means nothing. If your existing drive is not suitable, we will say so at the first visit and price the dig out instead.

Questions we are asked

Frequently asked questions

What does a resin driveway cost for a typical double drive?+

A double drive of around 40 square metres with a full excavation and new permeable base usually lands between £4,000 and £5,600, plus edging and drainage. Overlaying a sound existing base can bring that down, but it is only suitable on a minority of drives.

Is resin cheaper than block paving?+

The two are closer than most people expect. Resin usually costs slightly less per square metre to surface, but because it needs a genuinely flat and sound base, the preparation can be more demanding, and the total often finishes within ten per cent of a good block paved drive.

How long does a resin driveway last?+

On a properly built base, fifteen to twenty years of good service is realistic, with the aggregate and resin colour holding well if a UV stable system was used. On a poor base, problems usually appear within three winters.

Do you charge for a quotation?+

No. We visit, take levels, look at where water currently goes and sample aggregates with you, then issue a fixed itemised price with a dated programme. There is no charge and no obligation.

Why is your quote higher than the one I already have?+

Usually excavation depth, edge haunching and drainage. Ask both quotes to state the dig depth, sub base thickness, edge restraint detail and how surface water is dealt with. The differences become obvious very quickly.
