Block paving cost per square metre, explained properly

What a block paved driveway costs, broken down by the parts of the job most quotes leave vague.

Block paving is the most quoted driveway surface in Essex and the most inconsistently priced. We have seen the same frontage quoted at £48 a square metre and at £135 a square metre in the same week. Both firms were describing block paving. Only one was describing a driveway.

This guide sets out what we charge, what drives the number up or down, and the four questions that will tell you more about a competing quote than any brochure.

Typical block paving costs, larger residential frontages

ElementTypical rateWhat it includes
Standard concrete block driveway£90 to £120 per m2Excavation, membrane, compacted sub base, laying course, blocks, jointing and compaction.
Premium or clay pavers£130 to £190 per m2Textured concrete ranges, clay pavers and setts, including tighter cutting and detail work.
Haunched kerbs and edge courses£55 to £95 per linear metreKerbs or edge blocks bedded and fully haunched in concrete so the drive cannot spread.
Circle features and cut borders£350 to £900 eachCircle kits, radius borders and diamond inlays, priced by size and cutting involved.

Guide ranges for planning, based on our own 2026 pricing across north Essex and south Suffolk. Site conditions and access can move them either way.

The four questions that expose a cheap quote

  • How deep are you excavating, and to what sub base thickness?
  • Are all edge restraints haunched in concrete, on both sides?
  • How is surface water dealt with, and does it comply?
  • Who removes the spoil, and is disposal included in the price?

Where cost genuinely varies

Subsoil is the first variable. Boulder clay around Braintree and Halstead behaves differently from the sandier ground near the Tendring coast, and the dig depth follows the ground rather than a standard figure.

Access is the second. A frontage a machine can reach costs less than one where every barrow of spoil crosses a garden and every load leaves through a side gate. We price access honestly rather than discovering it on day two.

Pattern is the third. Herringbone laid at forty five degrees involves considerably more cutting than stretcher bond, and cutting is labour.

What we include as standard

  • Excavation to the depth the ground and vehicle loading require
  • Geotextile membrane where subsoil demands it
  • Sub base built and compacted in layers, tested as we go
  • Every edge restraint haunched in concrete
  • Falls set away from the property, with drainage designed in
  • Kiln dried jointing sand, compacted and topped up

Repairs and relays

Where a block drive is sinking in patches but was originally built well, a localised lift and relay is sometimes the sensible answer and far cheaper than a rebuild. Where the sub base was never adequate, relaying the same blocks onto the same ground buys perhaps two years. We will tell you which situation you are in before quoting.

Questions we are asked

Frequently asked questions

How much does a block paved driveway cost for a large frontage?+

A generous frontage of 90 square metres with kerbing, drainage and a standard concrete block runs roughly £9,500 to £13,000. Premium pavers, circle features or difficult access move that upwards.

Is block paving still a good choice in 2026?+

Yes, particularly on larger frontages where borders, banding and turning circles can be set out properly. It is also repairable in sections, which resin is not, and permeable ranges satisfy drainage rules without a separate soakaway in many cases.

How long should a block driveway last?+

Twenty years or more when excavation, sub base and edge haunching are right, with occasional jointing sand top ups. Most failures we are called to look at are edge spread and rutting, both traceable to preparation.

Do you take on small patio or path repairs?+

Honestly, no. We are set up for substantial driveways, courtyards and full garden schemes, and a single patio repair is better served by a smaller local firm. We would rather say that at the enquiry stage than take work we are not the right fit for.

Can you match existing blocks on an extension to a drive?+

Often yes, though weathering makes an exact match unlikely. Where a match is not credible we usually suggest a deliberate change of banding or border so the join reads as a design decision rather than a repair.
