Gardens designed around a Blackwater view
Large plots, real exposure, and schemes worth taking time over rather than rushing through.
Maldon, Essex
Designing for the estuary, not despite it
Maldon and the Blackwater villages bring us some of our most enjoyable garden projects. Plots are often large, views are worth designing around, and owners here tend to want something considered rather than quick.
The estuary setting also sets real technical demands. Exposure, changeable ground and surface water all have to be handled properly, and materials that look excellent in a sheltered Colchester garden can be the wrong choice a hundred metres from open water.

On the ground
What the estuary changes
Coastal exposure
Materials, fixings and jointing chosen to cope with wind, salt and heavy winter rain rather than to look good for a single summer.
Terracing and retaining
Sloping gardens terraced with engineered retaining walls, drained behind and finished in porcelain or natural stone.
Rural approach drives
Long drives rebuilt with correct sub base depths, edge restraint and drainage so they hold their shape year round.
Planting that survives wind
Structural hedging and shelter planting used to make a terrace usable, chosen for salt tolerance rather than catalogue appeal.

A recent Maldon job
Exposed garden turned into three usable rooms
A large garden with an uninterrupted estuary view and wind that made it unusable for most of the year. We designed shelter into the layout with hedging and a low rendered wall, then built a porcelain terrace, steps and a lawn that drains.
- Shelter planting designed as structure, not decoration
- Salt tolerant fixings and jointing throughout
- Land drainage under the lawn to cope with winter rain
- Built in two phases across a single year
FAQ
Maldon questions we get asked
What does a full garden scheme cost in Maldon?+
Most complete schemes we build land between £45,000 and £150,000. Sloping plots needing engineered retaining sit at the upper end, level gardens with a large terrace at the lower.
Which materials cope with coastal exposure?+
Porcelain and dense natural stone with the right jointing, stainless or galvanised fixings, and planting selected for salt tolerance. Softer sandstones and standard fixings do not last near open water.
Can a garden be built in phases?+
Yes, and near the estuary it is often sensible. Levels, retaining, drainage and terrace first, then planting and lighting in the right season, all to one drawn design so it never looks phased.
Do you rebuild long private drives?+
Frequently, in the Blackwater villages especially. The failure is almost always sub base depth and edge restraint, so a rebuild rather than a top dressing is usually the honest answer.
How long does a Maldon garden project take?+
A terrace and planting scheme runs three to five weeks. A full scheme with regrading, retaining, lighting and planting typically runs ten to eighteen weeks against a dated programme.
