Groundworks and driveway work of the kind we carry out around Sudbury

Sudbury, Suffolk

Working carefully around old Suffolk buildings

Sudbury, Suffolk

Where the machine gets left on the trailer

Sudbury and the Stour valley villages sit at the northern edge of our patch and are well worth the drive. Period properties, generous plots, and owners who understand exactly why good groundwork costs what it does.

Most of the work here involves working sympathetically around older buildings. That means hand digging near shallow historic footings, protecting mature trees properly rather than putting a plastic fence near them, and choosing materials that sit comfortably against soft red brick, flint and lime mortar.

On the ground

Period property considerations

Shallow historic footings

Careful, often hand excavation near old footings, with drainage routed so nothing undermines a wall that has stood for two centuries.

Traditional materials

Natural stone, clay pavers and gravel finishes chosen to suit conservation settings and older elevations rather than to follow a trend.

Valley drainage

High water tables and clay bands handled with land drainage and attenuation rather than a soakaway that fills and never empties.

Completed work of the kind we carry out in Sudbury

A recent Sudbury job

Gravel and clay paver frontage at a Grade II cottage

A period cottage where a concrete drive sat hard against the plinth and trapped moisture in the wall. We removed it, dug a French drain along the elevation, and laid a stabilised gravel drive with a clay paver apron.

  • Hand excavation within a metre of the historic footing
  • French drain to move water away from the wall base
  • Clay pavers chosen to sit against soft red brick
  • Root protection zones fenced before work started

FAQ

Sudbury questions we get asked

Can you work at a listed property?+

Yes, and we treat the consents as part of the job. Listed building consent may be needed for surfacing and boundary changes, and we work to the approved detail rather than around it.

What surfacing suits a period cottage?+

Gravel, stabilised gravel and clay pavers usually read best against older brick and flint. Modern charcoal concrete blocks can look severe next to lime mortar and soft brick.

How do you protect mature trees?+

Root protection areas are fenced before plant arrives, excavation near roots is done by hand, and where a drive crosses a root zone we use a no dig build up rather than cutting through.

Is Sudbury inside your working area?+

Yes, comfortably within our thirty mile radius of Colchester, and south Suffolk is a regular part of our week rather than an occasional trip.
